Hey folks,
I've always been a fan of the older authors like Dickinson, Emerson, Poe. Therefore, in respect to this blog and the research need, I made a Timely visit to our local Barns and Noble books store. Who doesn't like spending hours in that place huh?
Anyhow, I picked up a complete works by Edger Allen Poe. What a great addition to your library if you are looking to add. If you are unfamiliar with Poe, he is dark, menacing, and melancholic. If you are depressed and need something to read, this is not it.
Poe's "The Black Cat" is written in the form of a personal narrative. Telling it in first person, he describes a well off protagonist degrading not only himself but, through himself, his wife and pets also. As he swims in his own drunkenness, the protagonist snaps and commits a serious deed.
I'll not go into too much detain as I do not want to spoil a great story. But of you are looking for a dark, mind-bending piece of work, then Poe is a wise decision.
Hope you enjoy,
Michael

Thank you for sharing this story! I really enjoyed this bit of a literature. I was immediately drawn into the story, curious as to where Poe planned on taking this particular story, anticipating a particular darkness since you did mention it, but wondering just how far the story would delve into said darkness. Almost immediately I was shocked when he cut out the poor animals eye, I felt so bad for the helpless cat. This could be attributed to both my love and soft spot for animals but also the way Poe painted that particular picture. And even though that part upset me a bit it was still captivating. And then Poe delved further into the torture of the cat and again it was both captivating and almost upsetting. I felt a small sense of satisfaction when the narrator's house caught fire, feeling that after the cat was hung he deserved what had happened. The whole rest of the story was very enjoyable as a whole and once I finished, led me to read more of Poe's short stories. Thank you for your excellent recommendation, definitely a great and mind bending read!
